Undercover Overture
Wollemi pine (Wollemia nobilis), U1 device with musical instrument digital interface, speaker, mixed media 2020
“In January this year a swat team of specialist remote-area fire-fighters were sent to an undisclosed area of the Blue Mountains to save the only known natural stand of ancient Wollemi pines. Through this work I offer a small tribute to what has been lost – locally and nationally – and what has been saved.
A small metal clip attached to a selected leaf and a probe placed near the root system of this Wollemi pine records the plant's electromagnetic energy. The device translates these readings into live sound using a musical instrument digital interface (MIDI). By tapping into the energy of plants to generate musical notes I posit a conversation between the human and plant world that invites the audience to connect more deeply with other living beings.”
